WINTER HOURS

Mon - Wed: 11 - 6
Thurs - Fri:  11 - 8
Sat:  11 - 6
Sun:  12 - 5
The chocolate season is heating up and it seems the harmony that dark chocolate has with wines from France's Rhone Valley are the big theme this week at the shop.

Following last night's wonderful Qupe tasting, we have 3 more opportunities in the coming week for you to taste wines either from the Rhone Valley or made with Rhone grapes such as Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.  Read the Friday Night Flight and Events sections below for all the details.

New special chocolate items are rolling in just in time for the Valentine's Day.  We just received three magical items from Charles Chocolates, featured below, and we'll have a few other goodies from Alma, Depaula, Dolfin and Mademoiselle de Margaux arriving this week as well.

Some dinner plans are cooking up as we speak, so watch next week's email for a chance to signup for one of our 'very limited seating' dining events at the shop in March!

UPCOMING EVENTS · Tastings

TERRE ROUGE WINERY · This Saturday, Feb. 9 · 2PM - 5PM · $5 tasting fee

Join us this Saturday afternoon when Don Heistuman of Domaine Selections will be on hand tasting the wines from Amador's Terre Rouge winery.  Terre Rouge strives to produce Rhone-style wines from vineyards planted to Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre in the foothills of Amador County.  This is a drop-in tasting, no reservations required.  All Terre Rouge wines will be 15% off for customers who are tasting (20% off for cork club members).

DOMAINE ROUGE-BLEU & BANNERET TASTING · Wednesday, Feb. 13 · 5 - 7pm · $12 to taste

Special Guests Jean Marc and Kristin Espinasse will be at cork to show off wines from their new project, Rouge Bleu.  Since they're part of the Banneret family, we thought it would be great to also pour the current vintage of Chateauneuf du Pape from Banneret.  Jean Marc has worked in the wine business since childhood and recently started this new Rhone wine project and the wines are soon to arrive in Portland.  Kristin writes the very popular blog, A French Word a Day and is the author of the book Words ina a French Life.  Together they will charm you with tales of French country living and their lovely wines.  Open tasting, no reservations required.  Drop in anytime between 5 and 7pm.  Tasting fee $12.

REDISCOVERING NAPA VALLEY - A Backroom Tasting · Thurs, Feb. 21 · 6:30pm · $20/person

Fresh from a trip to Napa and Sonoma Counties, Sara and I will lead a discussion of what we learned.  This first week will focus on Napa Valley and we will taste through a selection of Chardonnay, Cabernet and some standout other varietals that will highlight what our renewed focus on California has unearthed.  RESERVATIONS REQUIRED!

SONOMA SELECTIONS - A Backroom Tasting  · Thurs, Feb. 28 · 6:30pm · $20/person

Sara will share her experiences from the trip, including a first-hand look at one Russian River producer we look forward to featuring in the coming year and a tasting of Russian River Pinot Noir contrasted against Dry Creek Zinfandel.  A Syrah will be in the mix that just might surprise you.  Darryl will share updates of what some of our favorite producers in the area have been up to this past year.  RESERVATIONS REQUIRED!

SARA'S CORNER
It's been pretty cold lately, and in light of this grey, wet weather, I have taken to warming my evenings with bolder reds, from Southern Oregon blends to trustworthy Italian wines.  Here's two favorites we recently brought into the shop:

2005 ROCKY KNOLL Claret  $30/bottle (cork club price $27)
Southern Oregon wineries are popping up with wines that rank alongside Washington Cabernets and big red blends. This one, from newer producer Rocky Knoll, is a solid, Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.  It's a brute of dark fruits, smoke, and leather notes and would surely appreciate a steak or lamb roast to break up all of that deliciously condensed plum fruit and bold structure.

2006 RENATO RATTI Dolcetto Colombe $19/bottle (cork club price $17.10)
Last week when Pietro Ratti was in the shop talking us through his wines in one of our backroom tastings, it became apparent why these guys receive such accolades in the wine community. The current offerings of ready to drink wines are dark, delicious, AND affordably priced. Pietro says that wines like the current Dolcetto, are made to drink now with food while your Barolos are getting much needed cellar time.
New CHOCOLATE Arrivals

Next week, of course, is that much awaited holiday in honor of eating a lot of chocolate and treating the one you love to a special night out (or in).  We're here to help.  These beautiful new collections have just arrived from Charles Chocolates and many other goodies will be rolling in to fill your chocolate needs over the next week.  Of course, we're happy to recommend some red wine or sparkling Moscato to pair with your choice of cocoa confection.

pbutterflytea collectionPEANUT BUTTERFLIES · The name says it all.  Dark chocolate incasing silky peanut butter, in the lovely shape of a butterfly.  Limited availability.
