Greetings cork readers,
We've
talked a lot about Spain, Italy, France and California already this
year and so we come full circle back to the Northwest with a few new
wineries we have started carrying here at the shop.
This Friday, we'll taste new arrivals from Quenett and Cathedral Ridge, both out of the Gorge and Remy and Purple Hands, both from the Willamette Valley (but with fruit mostly from Southern Oregon).
We've
also just received some more stunning higher-end Spanish reds that you
can ask us about if you drop in on Friday or over the weekend.
Finally, we just had a cancellation for next Wednesday's White Rock Winemaker's Dinner, so if 2 of you would like to join this event, please give us a call immediately at 503.281.2675. Details can be found here on our website about the dinner.
THURSDAYS IN MARCH: Free Corkage Fee for Cork Customers at Alberta Street Oyster Bar & Grill. We're open until 8pm, so come shop for your wine, then walk across the street for dinner.

FRIDAY NIGHT FLIGHT
|
NEW NORTHWEST WINERIES Friday, March 7 · $12 tasting fee · 4 - 8 pm
We've
been meeting a lot of new Oregon producers lately, tasting their new
releases and making some selections for the shop to introduce customers
to some of these new brands. Now that we have a handful of
bottlings in stock, we thought it was time for a Friday tasting focused
on these wines.
Join us from 4-8pm as we pull corks on wines from two value-oriented up-and-comers from the Columbia Gorge, Quenett from The Dalles and Cathedral Ridge
from Hood River. Both are turning out some classic Cabernet and
Merlot reds, and Quenett has a tasty Zinfandel that is good bang for
the buck. From grapes grown in Southern Oregon, we will be
pouring the Remy Syrah and the Purple Hands
Red Blend, which is Merlot with about 10% of Pinot Noir from the
Willamette Valley. Come drop in and see what the new breed of
Indy Winemakers are fermenting up. $12 tasting fee includes wine and
snacks. Drop-in tasting, no reservations required. |
NEW ARRIVALS
|
Sara
and I have both been tasting a lot of wine lately, so we are going to
each recommend a few new Northwest arrivals for you to consider on your
next visit to the shop.
Darryl's Picks:
2007 CAMERONI Giovanni · $14.25 ($12.83 cork club price) John
Paul at Cameron has been making Italian-style white wines for over 10
years now. This just released Pinot Bianco has classic pear and
winter apple flavors and a decent crispness on the finish, making it a
good match for lighter appetizers. Supplies are always small and
sell quickly, so if you want to be drinking this on your patio this
summer, grab a case now and tuck it away!
2006 QUENETT Redd Red Wine · $13.00 ($11.70 cork club price) You're
not seeing things, this really is a red wine from OREGON for less than
fifteen bucks! We don't taste many that we would consider
carrying, so we were pleasantly surprised by this soft and
easy-drinking Cab, Merlot and Syrah blend from newcomer Quenett out of
The Dalles. The fruit is mostly from the Washington side of the
Gorge and it is definitely the bang-for-the-buck winner for hearty
Northwest reds this month.
2006 REMY Syrah · $27.00 ($24.30 cork club price) A
step up in price, but also body and structure. This Rogue Valley
Syrah, made by winemaker Remy Drabkin in her Gaston winery, is dark and
smoky, with a touch of that Northern Rhone quality that comes from the
use of Viognier grapes for aromatics during fermentation. Enjoy
now with some decanting or cellar for 2-3 years and let the flavors
integrate for a more rewarding finish.
Sara's Picks:
With so many tiny, wonderful, and undiscovered Oregon wineries out there, we were lucky to learn about Cathedral Ridge thanks
to a member of their sales team who lives in the Alberta neighborhood.
A family-run operation led by winemaker Michael Sebastiani, these reds
are dark, rich, and earthy Columbia Gorge wines which are
Bordeaux-inspired and worthy of praise.
2005 CATHEDRAL RIDGE Merlot $18 (cork club price $16.20) A
powerhouse of rich, dark berries with fruit from the Kortag Vineyard,
this Merlot is intense, chewy, and leathery. Reserve this wine for
heartier meals like steak and potatoes or flame grilled burgers. Only
400 cases produced.
2005 CATHEDRAL RIDGE Bordheauxd Red $22.50 (cork club price $20.25) The
name alone implies that this wine is a Bordeaux inspired bute. This
blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah exhibits earth and
animal on the nose with rich, red fruits on the palate, plus a handful
of coffee, spice, and jammy blackberries. Probably the most interesting
and complex of the Cathedral Ridge line up.
