It's
dark at 4:55pm, it's wet outside, your cold and cranky after a long day
at the office. What to do to turn your spirits around? How
about a comfortable chair and a glass of 30 year old Port! We're
not selling chairs, but we can help with the Port part. Come join
us this Saturday for a very special tasting of Kopke Ports, with
special guest Fernando Oliveira, master blender who will be on hand to
pour and answer questions. And yes, we'll be pouring his 1977
Vintage Port at the event!
As for other newsworthy things this
week, there are lots of new arrivals just in time for Thanksgiving
(names like Brickhouse, Evesham Wood and Cameron come to mind) and our
Friday tasting will focus on our picks for your Holiday table.
Included
in the Friday tasting will be your first chance to preview our second
wine under our Alberta Wines label - the 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot
Noir. At just $16/bottle, we think it's the best value out there
for quality Oregon Pinot, but come taste for yourself and you be the
judge.
We will be CLOSED Thurs, NOV. 22 FOR THANKSGIVING DAY!
Pouring Cork Exclusives Thanksgiving Weekend · 12-5pm · Fri-Sun Join
us over the holiday weekend as we showcase a few new releases that will
be available only at Cork, including 2005 Apolloni Reserve Pinot Noir,
2005 Boedecker Cellars 'Shea Vineyard' Pinot Noir, 2005 Andrew Rich TBD
and the 2006 Alberta Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.

FRIDAY NIGHT FLIGHT · THANKSGIVING WINES · $12 Tasting Fee · 4:30 - 8:30 PM
|
TWO FIGHTS TO CHOOSE FROM: 5 Turkey Whites or 5 Turkey Reds - $12 for either flight.
Or try the Combined Flight of 1 ounce of all 10 wines for $15.
This
Friday, we wil pour for you the 5 whites and 5 reds we currently have
in the shop that sell for $20 or less and that we think you and your
family members will enjoy at that festive meal next week. We're
making this our 2006 ALBERTA Pinot Noir Pre-release Party as well, so
if you choose the flight of red wines, you'll be among the first to
taste this great value Willamette Valley Pinot.
The White lineup
includes Muscadet and Chenin Blanc from the Loire, a tasty Viognier
from Oregon, a crisp and floral Sauvignon from Italy and a personal
favorite Gruner Veltliner from Austria.
The Red lineup includes
the Alberta Pinot, a tasty California Zinfandel, an earthy and gamey
Chinon from the Loire, an offbeat choice that we think is Spain's
answer to Gamay, and a Cabernet blend that is fit for the whole
family. We hope you can all join us this Friday from 4:30 -
8:30pm.

KOPKE PORT TASTING · Saturday, Nov. 17 · 2 - 5PM · $5 Tasting Fee includes 1977 Port!
|
THIS SATURDAY · 2 - 5PM · Drop-in Tasting · No Reservations Needed!
This
is the time of year that a good glass of Port can wash away your
troubles at the end of a long day, and we have a great opportunity for
you this Saturday to come taste 5 Ports from our favorite producer with
the cute little bottles - KOPKE. Master Blender Fernando Oliveira
is in town for the big Portugal wine tasting that takes place today,
and since he was hanging out through the weekend, we convinced him to
come to the shop and pour some of their wines. To make it a
special tasting, we're going to open the 1977 Vintage Port
so you can see for yourself how great these vintage bottlings can
become with a few decades of age. On tap for Saturday's tasting
are the following Kopke Ports: Dry White, Ruby, 10 Year Old, 1991
Vintage and 1977 Vintage. The nominal tasting fee of $5 is really
just to help us cover the cost of the 1977 bottle (which is spendy but
sure is going to make someone a nice stocking stuffer this holiday
season!)

Winter
weather calls for winter whites that warm you, unlike the summery crisp
ones that cool and refresh. The following wines have a little more
weight to them and will taste great alongside those richer dishes that
come with the holiday season.
2006 Conti Sertoli Salis "Torre della Sirena" The
"Torre della Sirena" is an unusual white wine made from the pink
skinned grapes Rossola and Pignola which are appreciated in Lombardy
for their delicate aromas. Try drinking this wine at a cool room
temperature, because a little warming allows for the lychee, dried
apricot, banana, and cream flavors to really emerge. Great with rich
and creamy pastas and young cheeses.
2006 Domaine de la Mordoree "Le Reine des Bois" Rhone
whites are often deep and round with long finishes, like this Grenache
Blanc based one from Lirac. The other grapes in this blend, Viognier,
Rousanne, and Marsanne, are all ample and buttery on their own, but the
combination creates a complex wintery white highly flavored with
peaches, apricots, and pears. A little time in oak lends to the density
and creaminess of this gorgeous blend. Think roast chicken with
fingerling potatoes in the oven, a fire going, a creamy cheese plate,
and friends and family to share it all with.

NEW ARRIVALS
|
We have so many new wines that have just been released from the
Northwest, I am not going to list them all here. But you can keep
up with most of them online, just click here. A few standouts that will be great to drink over the coming season are:
2006 BRICKHOUSE Gamay Noir · Very limited supply of Doug Tunnell's estate-grown Gamay, always a crowd pleaser and a great choice for Turkey Day.
 2003 IJALBA Rioja
· A truly unique twist on wines of this region, made from 100%
Graciano. You'd never guess this is a thinner grape used to add
acidity in blending with Tempranillo because here very low-yield,
extracted Graciano has produced a rich, ripe and delicious red wine.
NV DORIGO Brut
· A lovely way to start off any holiday gathering - something sparkling
and new for us from Friuli. Dorigo produces some of the loveliest
white wines coming out of Italy, so it is no surprise their methode
classique sparkling white should have such delicious floral pear and
apricot aromas and a tasty dose of milled wheat on the palate.
For less than $20, it's hard to find a better Sparkling Wine to share
with friends. Got cheese?
