2006 ABACELA Malbec (Reg. $25.50)
cork club $22 · nonclub price $23.50
Deep
purple in color, Abacela's Malbec definitely reminds me of the style we
see coming out of Argentina. Flavors of licorice, blackberry,
black currants and cassis can all be found in this bottle. Less than
1000 cases made and hard to find outside the winery, if you'd like some
we have it for you.
2007 ABACELA Dolcetto (Reg. $21)
cork club $18 · nonclub $20
The
first Abacela wine I ever bought was their Dolcetto and I've been a fan
ever since. You haven't seen this one before? Well, given
they make about 250 cases that isn't surprising. It has darker
cranberry and cassis notes and more structure than its Italian
counterpart, but Abacela manages to retain the brightness that this
grape deserves. Goes so well with classic Italian dishes like
stuffed pumpkin ravioli with butter & sage.
2007 ABACELA Garnacha (Reg. $23.00)
cork club $19.50 · nonclub price $21
We
know Abacela set out to identify what grapes do best on its soil, and
given the findings on Tempranillo, it is no surprise they have also had
success with Garnacha, a grape also grown in Rioja and throughout
Spain. Here it is bright and spicy, with white pepper, notes of
strawberry and a bright finish. Perfect with spicy chorizo or
perhaps fideo with duck and clams. Just 166 cases made!
2006 ABACELA Port 375ml (Reg. $26.25)
cork club $22.50 · nonclub $24
I
didn't recall Abacela made Port until I visited the winery last
year. Using 5 traditional grapes grown in the Duoro region, and
fortified with just enough brandy to give it a kick, the wine sports
dark cherries, coffee and bitter chocolate notes with the
characteristic warming finish we expect from Port. Got chocolate?
