2005 CANTINA DEL PINO Barbaresco (Reg. $48)
cork club prices: $41/bottle or $460/case · $45 nonclub price

Cantina del Pino BarbarescoLast Fall, a friend returned from working harvest with Renato Vacca at Cantina del Pino and brought with her a lot of excitement and a bottle of the 2005 Barbaresco to share with us.  Needless to say it took about 6 months for our schedules to coordinate and when I tasted it last Spring, I was more distracted to hear of her Italian adventure than to concentrate on tasting the wine.  Then 2 weeks ago, I was at a huge Italian tasting, with a full array of Renato Ratti Barolo and Aldo Conterno Barolo and off to the side were the Cantina del Pino wines.  As a loyal fan of the winery, I figured I should revisit this bottling and man am I glad I did.  Frankly, it was the best Nebbiolo at this whole tasting and one of the least expensive.

Renato is quickly rising to be one of the top producers in Piemonte and surely already has that status within the commune of Barbaresco.  He's also launched a new website, which is pretty cool, so get to know more about the estate here.  But what you really should become familiar with is this particular bottling before it sells out.  Very forward fruit, dark and dense but the tannins are quite refined and, with a few hours decanting, you can actually drink and enjoy this now in its youth.  Or you can hide it in the cellar for 5 years and come back to find what just might be a perfect expression of the Nebbiolo grape.  I can't wait to find out.
Limit 1 case per customer.

2005 ROBERT BIALE Monte Rosso Zinfandel (Reg. $54)
cork club $45 · nonclub price $50

Biale Monte RossoIt's no secret I'm a big fan of Zinfandel, and one of the first impressionable bottles I had in my wine-drinking youth was a Monte Rosso from Ravenswood.  Since then, I have always sought out bottlings from this particular vineyard.  Located high in the Mayacamas range on the Sonoma side of the hill, Monte Rosso was first planted in the mid 1800s and the Zinfandel fruit that is coming off this site today is from vines that were planted in the 1890's.  Yes, about 110 years old.  Talk about natural selection to get low yields, the concentration with these wines is unparalleled.  As you can imagine, the size of the production is tiny and with at least 3 wineries dividing the Monte Rosso fruit these days, each only makes a few hundred cases at most.  While everyone is focusing on the much hyped 2007 vintage, it's the 2005 that is starting to drink well.  2005 was not the greatest vintage overall but this particular bottle was tauted as one of the best of the crop.  If you want to try the truly special side of Zinfandel, set aside a quiet Sunday, open up a bottle and savor it throughout the day to see how it evolves and speaks to you.  Catching up on football or Mad Men is optional.
