Durban Muscat
'06/'07 DOMAINE DURBAN Beaumes des Venise (Reg. $20)
cork club $17 / 375ml bottle · nonclub price $18 / 375ml bottle

Is there a better value in nearly perfect dessert wine from France?  Please let me know if you think so, but for us, Domaine Durban consistently tops the list.  From a high hilltop overlooking the town of Gigondas and the Rhone Valley, Domaine Durban makes this late-harvest Muscat wine from 25 year-old vines.  Vintage after vintage, it is exactly what you want to be drinking alongside créme brulee or chocolate soufflé.  If you need a little something sweet in your cellar, these bottles tend to age well for decades! Both '06 and '07 in stock now and on equal par, perhaps the '06 is drinking better now and '07 will age longer.

2006 DORIGO Refosco (Reg. $18)
cork club $15.50/bottle · $16.50 nonclub price

This wine missed making our Offbeat Thanksgiving Wines tasting, in the words of Maxwell Smart, 'by that much'.  But that doesn't mean we think any less of its versatility to pair with the traditional Turkey meal.  Believed to be a distant relative of Shiraz, the Refosco grape is the dominant red indigenous varietal growing in Italy's Friuli zone (to the North of Venice). Here, in the capable hands of Girolamo Dorigo, the wine is a very important bottling in Dorigo's large lineup of red wines.  While it can sometimes be very grapey in flavor, Dorigo's 2006 bottling really shows the minerality coming from the soil and that certain Italian character that we know and love.

2007 EVODIA Garnacha (Reg. $10.50)
cork club $9.50/bottle · $10 nonclub price

A repeat appearance in Wine Finds for this great value from Spain.  I had a glass the other night at Toro Bravo and was quickly reminded how friendly this fruity little red can be.  Dancing with ripe red raspberry fruit, the smooth finish goes well with a variety of dishes.  Smoky barbecue sauce, spicy pizza with red sauce or your favorite burger will all be happy alongside the Evodia.

GUTIERREZ COLOSIA Fino Elcano (Reg. $12.50)
cork club $10.50 / 375ml bottle · nonclub $11.25

El Cano FinoFino Elcano owes its name to Juan Sebastian de Elcano, who was the first person to circumnavigate the globe.  At the end of his historic voyage, he made landfall in the area of El Puerto do Santa Maria, the home of Gutierrez Colosia. Lucky for us, this is one of those magical Andalucian towns where the coastal air and climate lead to the perfect mix to create proper conditions for top-quality, dry Sherry.  It is at once salty and nutty, with a sure almond quality and a bone dry finish, a splash of Elcano to start off the evening is a festive alternative to bubbly. Thanks to national importer DeMaison Selections, we have been educated in the ways of fine sherry and know that it is freshness that is most important.  Half bottles are the standard and the date stamp tells you when the wine was bottled.  Despite the freshness issue, since the wine is made in an oxidized manner, you can open a bottle and leave it in your fridge to nip at for a week or two until it is gone, without worrying about the wine degrading in this short period of time.  So grab some marcona almonds and maybe whip up a batch of croquetas and start your next gathering with Fino.  Then get out that big Tempranillo and await the roast coming out of the oven.
