Thanks for reading, Darryl 2006 LEVANTER Primitivo (Reg. $9) cork club $7.65/bottle or $86/case · nonclub price $8.25 When the Tuscans decide to branch out in the wine world, it seems they go South.  We've enjoyed the Li Veli wines of Puglia from the former Avignonesi owners and the Baglio del Sole wines of Sicily made by the Castellare folks.  Now, the son of the Vignamaggio owner in Chianti Classico has bought a small estate, also in Puglia, and is producing great values for hearty reds.  This wine is made from a clone of Zinfandel, called Primitivo, and is full of berry fruit with a big and dense structure to it.  If you've had the Orion bottling from Li Veli, you should check the Levanter out - similar quality at an even better price! Limit 1 case per customer. 2008 Primitivo Quiles Cono 4 (Reg. $12.50) cork club $10.75/bottle or $126/case · $11.50 nonclub price How's this for ironic.  The name Primitivo, which we just mentioned is the clonal twin of California's Zinfandel grape, also happens to be an historic first name in the Spanish province of Valencia.  So here we are talking about the Great Grandfarther of the Quiles estate, whose name was Primitivo.  The wine - it's all made from the Monastrell grape, the native clone of Mourvedre, that grows on the wind-swept plateaus of Spain's Alicante D.O.  The Cono 4 is named for the four months this wine spends in barrel, aging before release.  Similar to a Crianza from Rioja, this wine brings to mind wild blueberries and huckleberries with black pepper and a smooth finish.  Excellent with a wide range of dishes or to sip on its own.
