2007 URBAN UCO Torrontes (Reg. $10)
cork club $8.50/bottle · $9 nonclub price
Perhaps
the best white wine coming out of Argentina, the Torrontes grape can be
at once brightly aromatic and dry and crisp. This example from
Urban Uco fits the bill and would be an excellent choice when serving
spicy Thai or other Asian food. A nice value at some extra
savings for Wine Finds readers today. Limited to supply on hand.
2006 VIETTI Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne (Reg. $19) cork club $16.15/bottle · nonclub price $18
Writing
all of the ABCs, we've re-featured a few finds from earlier this year
that are still a great deal. The fact that Vietti changed
importers during the year and the prices are now extremely competitive
with the best Barbera out of Piedmont makes this worth another
look. This ASTI bottling is a classic blend of three
vineyard sites near Agliano (including part of the historic Vigna del
Noce vineyard formerly farmed by Trinchero). The wine boasts a
typical bright purple grape juice quality with crisp acidity that
defines the region. With fatty dishes, be it gamey Porcini
mushrooms or pork belly, this style of Barbera really shines.
2007 WITNESS TREE Estate Pinot Noir (Reg. $25) cork club $21/bottle · nonclub price $22
We had to wait until we hit W to tell you about one of our newest additions to the Willamette Valley line-up of wineries we are carrying at the shop. Witness Tree
has been around for many years, first as the premier producer of Kosher
wines, then as a real contender of quality under the watchful hand of
Bryce Bagnoll. Located next door to Cristom, and nearby Bethel
Heights as well, their Eola Hills estate vineyards are known for
producing heavier Pinots with body and soul to hold up to hearty winter
dishes. This 2007 bottling doesn't disappoint, with a toasted nut
quality, dried plum and some chocolate tones. Winemaker and
vineyard manager Steve Westby is doing an admirable job of building on
the foundation that Bryce laid out for him. Try it now at a great
price.
2008 XARMANT Txakolina (Reg. $15) cork club $12.75/bottle · nonclub price $14
You
didn't think the X would trip us up, did you? This bottle comes
from one of our favorite regions in the wine world, the Basque country
on the Spanish side of the border. Here, the white wines
pronounced Chakolee are light
and slightly effervescent and in the best instance display a hint of
the salt water that hangs in the air of the oceanside vineyards.
Xarmant is always our best value from Txakolina and the 2008 was
impressive in being much drier and tarter than prior bottlings.
As always, a great choice for Tapas and zesty Spanish fare. Plus
the low alcohol makes it a nice idea for brunch/lunch or kicking off
the party as a starter before pulling out the brooding bottles of
Tempranillo!
Y Don't We Have A Wine Here?
It turns out that the choices for the letter Y run the extreme of Yquem, which currently sells its 2005 bottling of Sauternes for $600 or Yellowtail,
whose recognizable label has single-handedly dampened the reputation of
Australian wines and instigated a flood of critter labels from around
the world. It also turns out there isn't a single grape varietal, red
or white, that starts with the letter Y. And since we feel the 2005 Guiraud Sauternes we currently have in stock at $68/375ml bottle
is a much better value than Yquem, given its 95 point Wine Enthusiast
score and placing in the Top 10 of Spectator's 2008 list with a 97, we
are just going to pass on the letter Y and move on to Z.
 2006 ZERBA Malbec (Reg. $42) cork club $34/bottle · nonclub price $38
Saved the best for last? Perhaps. If
you are a fan of seriously big red wines from Washington. I had
this as my #5 favorite of Top 10 Washington Reds I've tasted from the
2006 vintage, which was a balanced and classic year in Walla
Walla. We were most impressed to find that Zerba's use of oak
barrels has been reined in a bit, letting the fruit express itself and
reveal a more complete wine. Steak lovers and fans of the Malbec
grape shouldn't pass on this one. Special price limited to the
small supply on hand.
